Black Beauty - Binchotan Charcoal and Healthy living
Activated Charcoal may seem like it's the latest wellbeing discovery but it actually dates back to 1608.
Revered in Japan since the Edo period, Binchotan Charcoal is a natural way to purify, cleanse, and improve the quality of your daily life. Here at Mothwerk we import Binchotan Charcoal that has been made the time-tested way in its birthplace, the Kishu region of Japan in the Wakayama Prefecture.
Beyond purifying water, Binchotan Charcoal can be used to detoxify skin, purify air (much like a box of baking soda), whiten teeth, and can even be added to your rice cooker to improve its flavor!
To activate Binchotan charcoal, skilled artisans burn branches of Ubame Oak (an exceptionally hard tree native to the Wakayama Prefecture) in traditional kilns at low temperatures. Towards the end of the kilning process, they are blasted with heat and starved of oxygen until they glow white-hot and reach roughly 2300°F before being rapidly cooled and smothered with ash. Binchotan is sometimes called "white charcoal" because of this ash cooling.
This technique transforms the branches into nearly pure carbon and dramatically increases the surface area, allowing the charcoal to chemically adhere to and neutralize toxins and contaminants commonly found in tap water.
Around the house Binchotan Charcoal is an excellent deodoriser. Place charcoal sticks or bits inside your refrigerator, cabinets, or any place unwanted smells accumulate. They will absorb odors and moisture, helping to combat dampness and mold in a closet or drawer. They also serve as an elegant design feature in any space.
